The new EAW high resolution Douglas A-20A - non-flyable bomber version for the B26 slot.

No. 22 Sqdn RAAF began operations with the A-20A in New Guinea 1942-43. They also flew Boston III versions. This group was re-equipped with Australian built Beauforts in 1944. Flt. Ltn. W.E. Newton won the Victoria Cross, the Commonwealth's highest honor on Mar. 16th., 1943, flying with this squadron. During this mission he and his gunner, Sgt. J. Lyon were shot down and captured by the Japanese. Flt. Ltn. Newton was beheaded and Sgt. Lyon was bayonetted to death by the Japanese as their punishment for being captured.

The Australians adopted the USAAF gun nose conversion for their A-20's. It carried 6 .50 claliber machine guns in the nose and was used for low level missions against Japanese barges, shipping and other installations, and other ground attack duties supporting the Australian Army's advance against Buna. They used ot both as a strafer and bomber.
